Teaching Old Dogs New Tricks

 Do’s and Don’ts of dog Ownership/Parenting

Do love them always, feed them the best possible food you can afford. Play with them, exercise is good for you both. Train them, go to obedience class, you will be very thankful you did, and it might even stop you from relinquishing them in the future due to bad behaviour.

Let them be a part of the family, they are pack animals, they love their families, they need their families. Keep them fit and healthy. Take them to the vet, give them vaccines and get them fixed.

Be prepared beforehand for all possibilities, for injury, or death, for old age. Put them in the will and make sure you have a plan for them if you die.

Do this BEFORE you adopt. Oh, and adopt, do not buy. Consider adopting an old dog. [or cat] They have most likely been trained and they need a forever family.

Don’t buy anyone else a dog [or cat], its a personal decision. Don’t buy it for the kids, don’t buy for relatives, friends, etc.

Do not get another living breathing thing unless you have researched the heck out of it and know that you can deal with it. Don’t think of a pet as a commodity. Don’t get rid of them when they are old, have no time for them anymore: they don’t understand why they are being left behind. All they want is to be with you.

Don’t assume they will get over it if you do relinquish them to a rescue or shelter.

Don’t leave them kenneled for 8-10 hours a day then watch TV all night and then make them sleep for 8+ hours. Make time for them.

Black Lab Mix
11 Years Old
60 pounds

Shiloh is a loveable, mellow 11 year old, compact 60 pound black lab mix. She enjoys belly rubs, playing fetch, taking walks and going for rides. She gets along well with other dogs and most people although she is shy of SOME men. She has been tempted to chase the cat. She is house trained and manages stairs very well.We initially thought that Shiloh could stay at home alone all day but have amended this and are looking for someone who is at home most of the day or can take a dog to work with them. Shiloh would be an ideal dog for going to work with her person.

She is an absolute dear and a treasure. We don’t want her to be lonely. She also will need a minimum of a half hour walk every day and some time to play fetch. She is a loyal companion who is happy to hang out quietly with you.
Shiloh’s foster mom says: “Now I am looking for an absolutely fantastic home for her. Every dog I have fostered so far has ended up with a better deal than I could give them if I kept them. I’ve come to realize that’s my gold standard and that’s what I need to find for any dog I foster.”

Can YOU bring home “the gold?”

Shiloh is being fostered in Olympia, WA.

If you want to learn more about any of the pets from Rebecca’s Rainbow or want to meet one of them, please contact us.
If you see an animal that interests you, you can use our online application forms to apply for an adoption.
If for some ungodly reason you must get rid of a dog/cat/pet like say you are getting up there in age and none of your godforsaken family will take your pets, or your house burns down or you become homeless and haven’t set up ‘a pet will’ beforehand then here are a few do’s and don’ts for getting the creature adopted out:
Do tell the shelter/rescue everything you know about your pet, the good AND the bad. It will help them to get just the right family for your pet.
Do go to a reputable shelter/rescue, there is far too many people ‘flipping’ animals on Craigslist. [those people may be going to hell]
to add to above,
Do not lie about your pet, be truthful and honest.
Do not withhold information about your pet, this could result in pets being adopted and given back to shelter, time and time again.

Psalm 12:10 Whoever is righteous has regard for the life of his beast,
but the mercy of the wicked is cruel.
Genesis 1:28 And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”
Luke 12:6 Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? And not one of them is forgotten before God.

Psalm 104:24 O Lord, how manifold are your works!
In wisdom have you made them all;
the earth is full of your creatures.
25 Here is the sea, great and wide,
which teems with creatures innumerable,
living things both small and great.
26 There go the ships,
and Leviathan, which you formed to play in it.
27 These ball look to you,
to give them their food in due season.
28 When you give it to them, they gather it up;
when you open your hand, they are filled with good things.
29 When you hide your face, they are dismayed;
when you take away their breath, they die
and return to their dust.
30 When you send forth your Spirit, they are created,
and you renew the face of the ground.

psalm 147:7 Swing to the Lord with thanksgiving;
make melody to our God on the lyre!
8 He covers the heavens with clouds;
he prepares rain for the earth;
he makes grass grow on the hills.
9 He gives to the beasts their food,
and to the young ravens that cry.
10 His delight is not in the strength of the horse,
nor his pleasure in the legs of a man,
11 but the Lord takes pleasure in those who fear him,
in those who hope in his steadfast love.

Why Do I Still Feel?

Why is it every morning I wake up with this low-level feeling of sadness and despair? My life is good, basically, I have worries, but nothing I can control.

I have a house, a job, a few friends, a family (albeit a dysfunctional one), nothing that requires this level of sadness.

I used to be a badass… Told myself and others that I was never going to let anyone hurt me, again. Keep the emotions inside, emotions were for babies.

But as I get older, as I found and lost more people, found and grasped onto God,  as I gained a husband, a baby, an extended family, I realized my real self is a ball of mushy disgusting feelings. My heart feels, too much. And I let it. Damn it.

{ I write this one morning and in the evening at my Jobs for Life class, we get to read this}

Psalm 51

Have mercy on me, O God,
according to your steadfast love;
according to your abundant mercy
blot out my transgressions.
2 Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity,
and cleanse me from my sin!
3 For I know my transgressions,
and my sin is ever before me.
4 Against you, you only, have I sinned
and done what is evil in your sight,
so that you may be justified in your words
and blameless in your judgment.
5 Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity,
and in sin did my mother conceive me.
6 Behold, you delight in truth in the inward being,
and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart.
7 Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean;
wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
8 Let me hear joy and gladness;
let the bones that you have broken rejoice.
9 Hide your face from my sins,
and blot out all my iniquities.
10 Create in me a clean heart, O God,
and renew a right spirit within me.
11 Cast me not away from your presence,
and take not your Holy Spirit from me.
12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation,
and uphold me with a willing spirit.
13 Then I will teach transgressors your ways,
and sinners will return to you.
14 Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God,
O God of my salvation,
and my tongue will sing aloud of your righteousness.
15 O Lord, open my lips,
and my mouth will declare your praise.
16 For you will not delight in sacrifice, or I would give it;
you will not be pleased with a burnt offering.
17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit;
a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.
18 Do good to Zion in your good pleasure;
build up the walls of Jerusalem;
19 then will you delight in right sacrifices,
in burnt offerings and whole burnt offerings;
then bulls will be offered on your altar.

Yearn for the Day

The New Heaven and the New Earth

21 Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for  the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more.

And I saw the holy city,new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God,prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.

And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God.

He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”

Do you yearn for this day?

IOWA 2015 ~ My Vacation

my luggage managed to get lost and I only received it two days til my departure

airport parking lot Micaela and Kristina

Arrival at the airport. I love Iowa and I love my hosts/my friends/my siblings in Christ

Thrift store shopping is something me and Micaela love to do and this was the find of the century!!

When I finally got my bags I told Micaela I think the guys brought me the wrong size jeans, mine are too small. MAYbe because Doug got up early and cooked me an apple pie and we ate a piece for breakfast every morning

I stayed on a farm/bednbreakfast/apple orchard with my friends I met blogging 6 [?] years ago. Been visiting every year ever since.

Doug put me to work raking up leaves in the orchard so the spores on the dead leaves do not infect the trees. Little did he know, I put a mysterious gift in each pile for him to pick up. {Libby poop}

This is Libby, resident farm dog. Master pooper and walker. Sometime bunneh killer.

Had to get a picture at Walmart. Doesn’t everyone?

iowa 2015 002

We figured out how to put stencils on apple crates. There were over 100 needed to be done but I think I only got to 15 of them.

my little gourd project. We can’t get gourds to dry here in the PNW, too damp. Pretty excited over this little thing.

My week went by way too fast. I must be a farm girl trapped in a city.

What is your favorite vacation spot? and your favorite thing to do there?
