~~~~~
The word permissible is only translated this in the NIV.
New Amer. Standard says:
Lawful means:
1Co 10:23 – [In Context|Read Chapter|Original Greek]
All things are lawful, but not all things are profitable. All things are lawful, but not all things edify.
exesti= it is lawful
~~
Profitable means:
Sumphero=
to bear or bring together
to bear together or at the same time
to carry with others
to collect or contribute in order to help
to help, be profitable, be expedient
1Co 6:12 – [In Context|Read Chapter|Original Greek]
All things are lawful for me, but not all things are profitable. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be mastered by anything.
~~
Mastered means:
exousiazo=to have power or authority, use power
to be master of any one, exercise authority over one
to be master of the body
to have full and entire authority over the body
to hold the body subject to one’s will
to be brought under the power of anyone
So with that in mind, lets talk.
At the top in brackets is what the verse is in reference to, the first being sexual immorality and the 2nd the believers freedom.
in the first, all things sexual are lawful but not all is profitable or beneficial to the person.
in the 2nd verse, pertaining to the believers freedoms, everything is lawful but not everything is constructive/edify.
To me these verses could be used for all things pertaining to our lives today.
Alcohol, how we spend our worship days, food, sex (within marriage), TV, voting, human rights, friendships, money. For that matter anything we could become addicted to or sin against our Lord with.
Or anything that takes our focus off God.
‘I can drink all i want, there is no law against it’
‘i can eat that Mcdonalds, its my money, my body’
‘i can have that abortion, its legal and its my body’
‘i can watch TV/computer and not spend time with my family, im tired, i worked all day, im gonna relax’
‘its my right to vote for whomever i want to and the other guy running is a jerk’
‘i have a right to say this to you, 1st amendment and all’
‘you have to {fill in any certain sex act} with me X amount of times a week, its your obligation as my wife/husband’
‘i can worship the Lord any way i want to, there is no law saying i can’t shop on sunday, go to a certain church (or not go to church, cuz dang, i like God but hate christians), speak/not speak in tongues, etc (fill in any of your personal pet peeves about church here)
~~
My brain just quit on me, that’s all I got. Comments?
  1. Ok let’s look at this from another angle. If I’m to emulate Christ, then I’m all about serving. If you ask these questions in that context, the answers jump off the page.
    Can I drink alcohol? There’s no law, but would it be a stumbling block to my kids if they see me do it?
    McDonalds? Sure, but can I serve Christ at my best if I eat there each day?
    X amount of fulfilment? Am I serving my spouse by being demanding? Or should I love and respect them by placing their needs first.
    Great questions!
    ~~ahh, good ones Des, you are right, its aobut serving, and in extension of that, love. do we loves others first or satisfying ourselves?
