Fun With Fetal Pigs ~ High School Style

Thought that title might catch your eye….

My son is doing fetal pig dissection in school. My opinion is extremely varied on this subject. But I  really want to educate the students on where the ‘specimens’ come from.

The students are having great conversations  about the specimens and where they come from. Most think the poor little animals just die from natural causes and get shipped nice and tidy to their classroom.

So off to the internet I went to find some info.

(My son is old enough to make his own choice about whether he would like to participate. I dissected a sheeps eyeball when I was a kid)

But I think with that education should come the other education about where these animals come from and how they get from there to here. Hopefully since they are curious about it, it will help to make them think about where stuff comes from and can make healthy choices about, well, just about everything when they grow up.

Here is the word doc. I have sent it the teacher, the teacher and principal are looking it over now.

Carolina Biological Supply (this is the company the school gets the specimens from)
It is hard to find a site that does not include instructions on alternatives to dissection and the steps to go about it with the school.  I apologize in advance.
I just want the kids to be informed about this procedure if they are interested.

I do not condone them doing anything against school policy.
Questions? you call e-mail me or call me; Kristina P****

So there it is, I added the supply companies that sell to schools so the kids could see what else they had to offer.
My son knows this is available on this blog, so if the students are really curious they can come here, I know quite a few of them read the blog.
Does the bible have anything about animal dissection in it?
Anything about breeding, raising, killing animals for scientific purposes?
For all we do, do it for the glory of Him who made us. (Would God approve?)

 Blessings, Kristina

(Tomorrow I get to attend a field trip with the high school class to the zoo. My son, being just generally embarrassed by his mother, is even more worried I’m going to try to set all the animals free. 🙂 )

Is it horrible to say that I love torturing my son. It’s not really his fault my mother tortured me as a child, why should I take it out on him?

Because I can 😉

  1. Oh, no, Kristina! When was the last time you went to the zoo? I used to love, love, love it, but that was when I was a kid, and then I went a couple of years ago, and realized all the animals that were meant to live wild and free and beautiful were imprisoned in fakely-painted tiny, tiny cells for their whole lives. 😦 You (maybe) think I’m only joking, but I know, carnivore that I remain, how hard it was for me when I went a while back. I don’t plan to go back for a long time. It’s too depressing to me. Maybe I should just look at the stuff in the petting zoo, etc. It’s the indoor stuff that makes me so sad. I hope you have a good time with the kids, though!
~~the petting zoo is gone, i think, wait there is a couple goats and sheep 😦

  2. P.S. I think PETA’s a horribly unbiblical & extreme organization, so proof-texting from them doesn’t excite me too much (in a positive way, anyway), but I’m glad I never had to dissect fetal pigs. I don’t care if they’re pigs–there’s something innately horrible about anything being ripped from its mother’s womb. 😦

Holy cow, am I sounding like an environmentalist whacko? Maybe they have their good points. 😛 😉
~~did you know the guy who runs the PETA blog is christian? i also dont agree with their tactics, but i will use their literature if thats all i can find. they document it the best. you sound like Ashley 🙂

  3. I encourage you to check out this website. It’s an amazing group. It’s the Christian Vegetarian Association and many questions are answered about God’s love and care for ALL of his creatures.
~~thanks for the info. i dont read in the bible where we are supposed to be vegetarians or vegans. And we, humans, are the only creatures created in Gods image, therefore considered ‘special, ‘loved’, ‘protected’. In the New test. we are told any animals are clean to eat.
I have no problem with the eating of meat, but the way people kill animals, and the over killing of animals and the improper handling of all things animal is wrong.
We are NOT to satisfy our gluttonuous sinful self with cosmetics and detergents (tested on animals and animal products used in), furs and animal oriented entertainment or the overkilling of animals and the huge amount of waste of food in general in this country.
We are to take care of our bodies because it is the temple of the Holy Spirit, we are to take care of our bodies to be healthy enough to do what God and Jesus commands us to do, take care of widows and orphans and go preach the good news to the ends of the earth. If we are sick and fat and lazy and only concerned with what goes into our faces, then we can NOT do what Jesus tells us. I appreciate the website link and will look more into it but from what I read just from the FAQ page, its not a convincing agrument for me to say, “Yes, God says we should NOT eat meat” Blessings, Kristina
