Musings of…..the Upcoming Elections

Romans 13:1-7

Dear Father, from whom all power comes,

Help me to show proper respect for the duly constituted authority of government. Help me to do what is good, that I may receive the approval of those who serve you for the enforcement of good order.

Teach me to be subject, not only to avoid the punishment of the state and to avoid your wrath, but also for the sake of my own conscience.

Give me the integrity to pay taxes to whom taxes are due, to give revenue to whom revenue is due, respect to whom respect is due, honor to whom honor is due.

May my subjection to proper human authority reflect my subjection to your authority. Don’t let me resist your will and incur judgment from you.

In the name of Jesus, who has all authority, I pray. Amen. From here

1 Peter 2:13Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every authority instituted among men: whether to the king, as the supreme authority, 14or to governors, who are sent by him to punish those who do wrong and to commend those who do right. 15For it is God’s will that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish men. 16Live as free men, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as servants of God. 17Show proper respect to everyone: Love the brotherhood of believers, fear God, honor the king.

And for us all to remember:

Romans 12:16-21

Dear Father, God of the lowly,

Help me live in harmony with others – without haughtiness, without conceit, willing to associate with the lowly.

Help me to repay no one evil for evil, but to take thought for what is noble in the sight of all.

As far as it depends on me, let me live peaceably with everyone.

Let me seek no revenge for myself, but leave it to your wrath, O God. Help me, Father, not to be overcome with evil, but to overcome evil with good.

In the name and authority of Jesus I boldly come, asking these things according to his will. Amen.

From here

So what else is in scripture about elections or voting or authority?

Does God demand we vote or do we as Americans demand a right to vote?

Since there wasn’t a democracy back in biblicial times for a reference how do we honor God by way of the elections?

Would love to hear your comments…..

Blessings, Kristina

Isiah40:5 And the glory of the LORD will be revealed,
and all mankind together will see it.
For the mouth of the LORD has spoken.”

6 A voice says, “Cry out.”
And I said, “What shall I cry?”
       “All men are like grass,
and all their glory is like the flowers of the field.

7 The grass withers and the flowers fall,
because the breath of the LORD blows on them.
       Surely the people are grass.

8 The grass withers and the flowers fall,
but the word of our God stands forever.”

  1. just so you know i have looked at this one several times now. i am sooooo okay with the top and soooooo wrestling with the bottom. i am a big “context” person. but truthfully, i am having a hard time finding stuff about elections, voting or voting authority. i wonder if there are some nuggets in the moses section of the bible. i’ll get back to ya.
~~If you do find stuff in Moses, let me know. I think we would be hard pressed to find much. there is some stuff on the umin and thurim, or whatever you call it, and did they draw lots to pick the 70 men to help the apostles? and how did they pick the men to help moses with decision making?
My thoughts here are that americans have taken the ‘as a free country’ right to vote and made it into a ‘a christians obligation’ to vote. which i dont see in scripture. Voting is like anything else, like the meat eating in corin., its a liberty, do it or don’t do it, but dont condemn others for their decision. and with any leader, horor them. i hate seeing these bumper stickers downgrading the current president. God told us to honor and obey them…..

  2. man, after two days of digging (minus getting ready for my youth lesson for wednesday) i can’t really dig anything out. i may get the commentaries out later, they need dusting anyway.
~~yeah, dust off those commentaries, but there isnt much in the bible to read a commentary about.
please let me know what you find!
