Musings on…………Obedience


Obey Me!

What do you think of when you hear that word?

Something a parent would say to a child?

Something a controlling abusing spouse would say?

An overbearing boss to a harried employee?

From a demanding omnipotent impersonal God to his scared little robot people on earth?

or do you think of….

A wise parent to a young misguided child for his safety?

An older mentor to a younger person, by way of example?

An all-wise knowing God to His obstinate forever-sinning children, for their own good and ever-lasting life?

Most people look at this in a negative, we have since we were children. We don’t want to obey anyone else.

We want to do what we want to do, when we want to do it and how we want to do it and


If we are not going to [obey] listen/take advice to the people here on earth who are wiser and elder than us, why would we listen to a God that we cannot see or hear or touch. or control.

The word obey;

–verb (used with object)

1. to comply with or follow the commands, restrictions, wishes, or instructions of: to obey one’s parents.
2. to comply with or follow (a command, restriction, wish, instruction, etc.).
3. (of things) to respond conformably in action to: The car obeyed the slightest touch of the steering wheel.
4. to submit or conform in action to (some guiding principle, impulse, one’s conscience, etc.).

–verb (used without object)

5. to be obedient: to agree to obey.

o-be’-di-ens, o-ba (shama`; hupakoe): 1. Meaning of Terms:In its simpler Old Testament meaning the word signifies “to hear,” “to listen.” It carries with it, however, the ethical significance of hearing with reverence and obedient assent. In the New Testament a different origin is suggestive of “hearing under” or of subordinating one’s self to the person or thing heard, hence, “to obey.” There is another New Testament usage, however, indicating persuasion from, peithomai.Obedience is what God wants. Why is that so hard for us?How do we obey God? By doing what He wants.

What does He want from us?Luke 10:25 And a lawyer stood up and put Him to the test, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” 26 And He said to him, “What is written in the Law? How  does it read to you?” 27 And he answered, “YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTH, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND; AND YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.” 28 And He said to him, “You  have answered correctly; DO THIS AND YOU WILL LIVE.”

From the scriptures, but I’m sure I will miss some stuff, bear with me. {most of these show how God will bless those who obey Him}

De 27:10 -“You shall therefore obey the LORD your God, and do His commandments and His statutes which I command you today.” De 28:1 – “Now it shall be, if you diligently obey the LORD your God, being careful to do all His commandments which I command you today, the LORD your God will set you high above all the nations of the earth. De 28:2 – “All these blessings will come upon you and overtake you if you obey the LORD your God: Ex 23:22 – “But if you truly obey his voice and do all that I say, then I will be an enemy to your enemies and an adversary to your adversaries. Ex 19:5 -‘Now then, if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant, then you shall be My own possession among all the peoples, for all the earth is Mine; De 30:10 – if you obey the LORD your God to keep His commandments and His statutes which are written in this book of the law, if you turn to the LORD your God with all your heart and soul.

1Sa 15:22Samuel said, “Has the LORD as much delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices As in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, {And} to heed than the fat of rams. Isa 1:19 – “If you consent and obey, You will eat the best of the land; Jer 7:23 – “But this is what I commanded them, saying, ‘Obey My voice, and I will be your God, and you will be My people; and you will walk in all the way which I command you, that it may be well with you.

Jer 38:20 -But Jeremiah said, “They will not give you over. Please obey the LORD in what I am saying to you, that it may go well with you and you may live. Zec 6:15 – “Those who are far off will come and build the temple of the LORD.” Then you will know that the LORD of hosts has sent me to you. And it will take place if you completely obey the LORD your God.Mr 4:41 – They became very much afraid and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey Him?”

Lu 8:25 – And He said to them, “Where is your faith?” They were fearful and amazed, saying to one another, “Who then is this, that He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey Him?” Lu 17:6 – And the Lord said, “If you had faith like a mustard seed, you would say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and be planted in the sea’; and it would obey you.

Ac 5:29 – But Peter and the apostles answered, “We must obey God rather than men. Ac 5:32 – “And we are witnesses of these things; and {so is} the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey Him.” Ro 6:16 – Do you not know that when you present yourselves to someone {as} slaves for obedience, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin resulting in death, or of obedience resulting in righteousness? Eph 6:1 – Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. Col 3:22 -Slaves, in all things obey those who are your masters on earth, not with external service, as those who {merely} please men, but with sincerity of heart, fearing the Lord.

Heb 5:9 – And having been made perfect, He became to all those who obey Him the source of eternal salvation, Heb 13:17Obey your leaders and submit {to them,} for they keep watch over your souls as those who will give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with grief, for this would be unprofitable for you. Jas 3:3 – Now if we put the bits into the horses’ mouths so that they will obey us, we direct their entire body as well. 1Pe 1:2 – according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, by the sanctifying work of the Spirit, to obey Jesus Christ and be sprinkled with His blood: May grace and peace be yours in the fullest measure.
