Abel’s Sacrifice

Only got comments about the unclean food, so I was wondering about this question:

First Question

Do you think the sacrifice of Abel was received by God {and Cains was not}because

A. Abel’s sacrifice was of animal and blood {Cain’s was was fruit from the ground}

or

B. Abel’s sacrifice was good because his heart was in the right place {and Cain’s heart was not ‘right’ with God}?

*Scripture below

Genesis 4: Cain and Abel

1 Adam lay with his wife Eve, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Cain. She said, “With the help of the LORD I have brought forth a man.” 2 Later she gave birth to his brother Abel.
Now Abel kept flocks, and Cain worked the soil. 3 In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the LORD. 4 But Abel brought fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The LORD looked with favor on Abel and his offering, 5 but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast.

6 Then the LORD said to Cain, “Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? 7 If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must master it.”

  1. I know that Matthew Henry assumes Adam to be the priest offering the sacrifice, rather than Cain & Abel making the sacrifice himself. So Henry argues that Adam accepted both sacrifices and offered them, and God seeing Cain’s heart rejected his sacrifice as a result…

  2. The more interesting question (although unanswerable) is whether God had given laws concerning sacrifice already (which animals and such) and Cain outright defied them because of the conceit in his own heart. I wouldn’t doubt this to be the case.

Another interesting historical question, when Cain struck Able did that Able could die? Abel could have been the first human to die, and this might explain the mercy God shows Cain when he confronts him. Once again, this is just conjecture. I love these ind of thought questions. 🙂

You probably don’t need this any more, but I was looking for the Hebrews answer for a long time and I wanted to share it whether or not it fit.

    Hebrews 11:4
By faith Abel offered to God a more acceptable sacrifice than Cain, through which he was commended as righteous, God commending him by accepting his gifts. And through his faith, though he died, he still speaks.
    Hebrews 12:24
and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel.

And of course his faith was a gift from God so his gift could have been Legos and it would have been a more acceptable sacrifice because of his faith which pointed to the cross.
