Comforting the Feebleminded KJV Style

I just read a post about someone having an extremely trying day due to Post Traumatic Stress Disorderthen walked into do my bible study on Thessalonians.
This is a paraphrase of what it says;
The Thess. believers  suffered persecution and it was wearying and apparently some were in danger of fainting.
But fainting is not of the Lord, even under persecution. We are to stand, suffering, affliction and persecution are all part of the christian life.

God uses these to mold us and make us into the image of Christ and to demonstrate to the world the sufficiency of Christ which makes us more than conquerors.
we may be individually strong sometimes in suffering, but we must realize if one member is affected, the whole body is affected.
we are responsible to minister to those who are fainthearted.
some scholars think that verse 14 of 1 thess 5

{14And we urge you, brothers, warn those who are idle, encourage the timid, help the weak, be patient with everyone.}

the ‘encourage the fainthearted’ may refer to:
1. those not naturally bold
2. those temporarily overwhelmed by the stress of things and/or
3. those with little courage.
Encourage  (NASB) or Comfort (KJV) 3888, Strongs, paramuqeÑomai

is to comfort/console and is in the present imperative, PIM, which means to command to do something in the future and involves continuous or repeated action.
Fainthearted  (NASB) 3642, Oligopsuchos, or feebleminded (KJV) means timid, discouraged, its only stated in Thess., from oligos=little and psucho=soul, mind.

It then goes on to talk about hebrews 12:1-3 and we are to write out a statement showing how to encourage someone who is fainthearted from these verses.
I will try to answer these questions.

I’m still not very good at getting from the interpretation to the application.
1Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.

since we have these witnesses, testimonies, examples to look at, we can be assured of, no matter what, we are His. Our life is a race to the finish, eternity in heaven with our Lord. These witnesses were sinful people just like us and God took them and used them and made them His.

2Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

He endured the cross and the shame and is at the right hand of the Father, as will we someday. He did it in joy, as we should also suffer for the cause, His cause. Fixing our eyes on Him, will help us to endure, giving up the whatever it is that weighs us down, giving it to Him, will , now, see I can just get lost in translation, maybe I’m too heavenly minded to be of any earthly good.

3Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.

Consider, think about how much He endured and had the Father to bear up under, We have Jesus to bear up under. At times we feel our crisis’ are/is so great, but never a great an undertaking as the Son of man.

Maybe if I think about more, I can come up with something better than that.

But then again, whats more encouraging than scripture?

Sounds kinda weak, maybe I’m just not in the ‘spirit’ right now. 🙂

Its basically an encouragement that we have Christ to help us when we need it and also to look back at some figures in the bible to see their faults and their faith. And that we should look to Jesus for that encouragement.

I get a kick out of the fact fainthearted is feebleminded. Sometimes I feel feebleminded, like right now, in fact.

I better just go to bed. Sweet Dreams.

Praise be to the True Living God of heaven and Earth.

  1. OK, OK, I get it. I’m feebleminded. Golly, Kris, thanks for the “encouragement.” Maybe you can find a scripture that tells me I’m ugly and my breath stinks too.

    But seriously…

I appreciate(d) you coming by and giving me some encouragement. I just had a rough spot yesterday, but today is much better.

  2. “we may be individually strong sometimes in suffering, but we must realize if one member is affected, the whole body is affected.”

Amen. This is how we should love Christ- to obey His commands and love our brothers. It’s in 1 John somewhere.

  3. Oh jeez, i knew i should have just called it a night and not posted this!
Kevin, you are not feeble minded, just temporarily overwhelmed by the stress of things! You aren’t really offended, are you?
Tho, i do like the word ‘feebleminded’ has a nice ring to it.
Glad i could encourage you somehow, even if it was just to make you laugh.
There probably isnt any ugly or bad breath scripture, but gosh i’m sure your redhead loves you. 🙂
ok, im just cracking myself up here, gotta go get something done today, other than encouraging others, cuz obviously thats not working. 😦

  4. Of course I’m not offended. Perish the thought.

And my redhead certainly loves me, which is pretty cool. We were just sitting here talking and she says I’m good looking and only occasionally have bad breath.

  5. Kris, whether you are a deacon’s wife or a deaconess or minister or whatever the heck you are, you are good at this “encouraging” thing. I have been helped by your words, as obviously Kevin was and probably many others, too. So please keep it up. (And by the way, if you and Kevin keep it up, I will have to suggest you two get a room, ok?)

  6. No Novice,
    Kevin likes
    damewigginsoflee, Dontcha, Kevin?
    And his redhead, of course.
I’m glad I can be an encouragement to someone!
No offense taken on the comment!
I’m sure if Kevin and I lived closer we would be good buddies as would our spouses!
Then we’d have to get two beds in our room!!!

  7. I’m like Jesus: I love you all. And the ones who don’t love me back I’m going to eternally torture with fire.

My Redhead keeps me pretty busy on the romantic front. (And sometimes on the rear.)

    And Kris,

If we lived closer we’d be buddies? The last time I tried to stop by you called the cops!
