I THINK therefore I …

Standard

I have gotten some agreement with this post and some disagreement, maybe I’m a pessimist or a realist.

I was thinking, I do my best thinking in the shower, but its hard to write notes down. They get wet.

Now just think about this, while having a conversation and a person starts a sentence with ‘I Think’. In actuality what is person really saying?

A ‘I Think’ sentence is [most of the time] self centered, opinionated, arrogant, selfish……
It’s in the same category as “I don’t mean to be rude but..” then they proceed to say something rude.

My buddy RR, doesn’t agree with me and I’m waiting for his reply and some examples. (which its been 4 days and nothing, maybe he can’t think of anything)

Using an ‘I Think’ sentence is fine when your opinion is wanted and appreciated. But I cringe when I hear someone start off with it.

I relayed this thinking to 2 friends of mine and they sort of gave me a funny look, a contemplating look, then agreed with my thinking.

[Side Note: is a blog self serving?]

Will I stop using the ‘I Think’ sentence. Probably not, but the world would be a better place if we just stopped and thought about what we are about to say.

I have always liked the word ‘ruminate’ , if we ruminated more and spoke less, think about how the world would be a much calmer place, picture a field with lots of cows, just lounging around, ruminating. 🙂

Say I love you first.

Romans 12:3 For through the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not  to think more highly of himself than he ought to think; but to think so as to have sound judgment, as God has allotted to each a measure of faith.

Romans 2:3 But do you suppose this, O man, when you pass judgment on those who practice such things and do the same {yourself,} that you will escape the judgment of God? 4 Or do you think lightly of the  riches of His kindness and tolerance and patience,  not knowing that the kindness of God leads you to repentance?

1 Corin 13:11 When I was a child, I used to speak like a child, think like a child, reason like a child; when I became a man, I did away with childish things.

Lifes Little Lessons

Standard

On several occasions my son learned life lessons.

1. We were at K-Mart and man came up to us in the parking lot asking to borrow money, he was parked across the street and needed gas. My son was about 7 or 8 at the time. I told my son he could give him some money out of his own pocket, he did. My son is very, very giving and kind and etc. So we hop in the car and pull out of the lot, only to see the man walk across the street. I said, let’s follow him to see where he is going. He walked straight into the liquor store. My son was devastated. I was hopping mad. I told Son we should go in there and ask the man why he lied, took money from  a little boy and bought alcohol with it. Son said no, leave it be. Lesson number 1.

2. A few months ago the family was heading out of our residential street to a main street and a man aproached the car on my husbands side and asked for money, his wife and child were in their car down the street and they needed gas. My husband gave him money. But my son and I knew him, he used to live up the street from us, used to have a wife and kid, started using drugs, lost house, said wife and kid and had been seen on the streets near by tolling for cash for months. I should of said something to that man, but I didn’t want to get him upset or my son. Lesson number 2.

3. A few summers back our summer bible day camp run by our church did a little community service thing, the kids made lunches and were told to give them out to homeless people. A fine idea, in theory. My son and I drove around for hours looking for a homeless person to give that darn lunch to. I would of hated to be the mom who had 6 kids and each of them got a lunch to deliver. Do you know where all the homeless people are in August, in the middle of the day? Not in the sun on the freakin street corner! We gave up that day, but we kept the non-perishable lunch in our car and finally gave it out to a nice older gentleman on a known homeless hangout corner. He was very pleased to get our treat and told us God Bless You! Lesson number 3.

Matthew 6:2 “So when you give to the poor, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they may be honored by men. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full.

Matthew 19:21 Jesus said to him, “If you wish to be complete, go {and} sell your possessions and give to {the} poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.”

1 Corin 13:3 And if I give all my possessions to feed {the poor,} and if I surrender my body to be burned, but do not have love, it profits me nothing.

James 2:5 Listen, my beloved brethren: did not God choose the poor of this world {to be} rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom which He promised to those who love Him?

TV update, much ado about nothing

Standard

Update on the TV not being in our bedroom.

Hubby and son have on numerous occasions went  into the bedroom to jump on the bed and watch TV. Funny faces I see when they walk out of there. I have missed the TV on 2 occasions, the boys were gone and I was gonna curl up in bed and zone out on the boob tube and when I iron. It’s way too cold to go downstairs to watch TV so I haven’t watched much at all. Which is ok, because now I’m on the computer all the time. Can you say Blog Heaven? 😉

Shows I watched:

What Not to Wear, Rob and Big, Dr. 90210, 7th Heaven, Still Standing   (only because someone said I act like the mom in that sitcom)

[I disagree], Miami Ink, Mythbusters, Dirty Jobs, Animal Planet {any show on that channel} Food Network {any show}, Little People.

My son watches Disney, Cartoon Network & Nickelodeon. He hates watching the news or anything scary. That leaves out pretty much all of TV land.

Shows I have tuned into, but burned my eyes on them: Nip/Tuck, Dirt, any CSI/crime show, most any show on E!, VH1 or MTV, Southpark, Family Guy, Simpsons.

Son has watched a few movies on TV since it has landed in his room, and played a few games on his game console thingy. Since being housebound for 6 days, I have cut him a little slack on the TV viewing because its better than being out in the snow freezing. He sticks to his rules and we haven’t had any problems. yet.

So, What Not To Wear cracks me up. I would love to be on that show only if Stacy and Clinton would come to my hood and try to dress me from our mall and thrift stores for $5000 bucks and make me stylish. I could get a bigger wardrobe here than in New York. But I’m a stay-at-home engineer and I pretty much just wear work out clothes and jeans and t-shirts.

Dr. 90210 is insane, I love the operations and transformations. I used to watch the discovery health channel all the time, they had operations on late night and I could watch those forever. But people are so crazy about changing themselves, don’t get me started on a rant here, have been guilty of changes myself [teeth whitening] shhh.

I also love Miami ink, people get the wackiest tattoos. Every time I watch that show I want to get another tattoo. {but, Krislinatin, what does the bible say about tattoos?}

I have no idea what is up with those Rob and Big dudes? Are they, you know? What does Rob do? As a job?

Animal Planet is a no brainer, I love animals, I would have millions of them if my hubby wasn’t here to keep me in check. My animals are spoiled, my dog is a princess, she thinks she is people. I cry when I watch Animal Precinct and Emergency Vets. [I’m really a big softie, but do not tell anyone]

Food Network is just good viewing, my son had a crush on Rachel Rae and we both love Alton Brown. My son and I went to see Alton Brown when He was book signing at a Costco up north. People get pretty giddy when a ‘celebrity’ comes to town. A young couple in line in front of us was nice enough to take a picture and send it to us.

My laziness and my want for comfort and warmth keep me from going downstairs to watch TV. Which is a good thing, right?

My “friend” MR, called me the yenta of our church family, but upon seeing the definition for YENTA, I don’t think that really fits. She saw a ‘yenta’ in a movie somewhere. Another definition for yenta is matchmaker, but I have never made a match, so that doesn’t really fit either. I am ‘in the know’ I don’t know how I am all the time, but I am.

Blessings,

15He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him. 17He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. 19For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, 20and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross. Colossians 1:13-20

A Wise Child Once Said

Standard

My son knows I struggle with the bottle, at one time I had either had a drink or was talking about wanting a drink, this is what he found for me:

29 Who has woe? Who has sorrow?
Who has strife? Who has complaints?
Who has needless bruises? Who has bloodshot eyes?

30 Those who linger over wine,
who go to sample bowls of mixed wine.

31 Do not gaze at wine when it is red,
when it sparkles in the cup,
when it goes down smoothly!

32 In the end it bites like a snake
and poisons like a viper.

33 Your eyes will see strange sights
and your mind imagine confusing things.

34 You will be like one sleeping on the high seas,
lying on top of the rigging.

35 “They hit me,” you will say, “but I’m not hurt!
They beat me, but I don’t feel it!
When will I wake up
so I can find another drink?”

Proverbs 23:29-35

Why would anyone want to be like this? Yet, I was. No more, I have so so much to be thankful for and so many reasons not to drink. My God and my son keep me from it.

Blessings on your day!

Death of a Believer

Standard

I had a cat, her name was Itty Bitty Pretty Kitty. Bitty for short.

She was the first furry creature I owned, I loved her for 14 years, I had her before I had a son and husband. She and I had been thru lots of times together, good and bad. She slept with me every night and begrudgingly shared me with my son. By the time she died, she was blind in one eye, lots of tumors in her body and decided my son would be the victim of all her hurts and frustrations. She peed in his room. A lot. Can’t really blame her, she couldn’t talk and she was trying to tell me she was sick. I was devastated when I had to put her to sleep. I kept her close to me during her final week, talked to her, told her I loved her and I was only doing this to make her feel better.

I think she understood and was OK with it. Then I took her to the vet. I went alone. We were alone together when I found her and we were alone together when she left me. The vet was wonderful and I found out that day Dr. was a Christian, we talked about where animals might go when they die and we agreed we hoped they would be with us in heaven. After the vet gave Bitty the shot, Dr. asked me if I wanted to stay and talk to her. But I thought that odd, because now that she was dead, what would I talk to, a body, a shell, a case?

Whether or not she had a soul, ‘she’ was no longer there. I told Dr., no, I had told her everything I needed to already. When I left the office I was still doing pretty good, then I tried to call my hubby, he didn’t answer, so my pastor was the one to get the unfortunate duty of listening to me wail and cry about Bitty. He was very gracious and prayed for me and calmed me down. I miss her everyday.

1990-2004 Bitty Kitty

Ok, so I have rattled on about that, but what made me think of that, was

 1 Thess 4:13-18

13Brothers, we do not want you to be ignorant about those who fall asleep, or to grieve like the rest of men, who have no hope. 14We believe that Jesus died and rose again and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. 15According to the Lord’s own word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left till the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. 16For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. 18Therefore encourage each other with these words.

What happens to believers when they die? I have never had a close family member or close beloved one die since I have started my Christian sojourn. My gramma died, but we weren’t that close. I’m not quite sure if she had a ‘personal relationship’ with Christ.

A wonderful man from church died, I knew He loved His Lord and I know I will see him again. So, I am sad, and sad for his wife who is left here on earth, I’m happy to know where he is and that his wife and I will see him again. But I’m sure a lot of people think the same as me, where do they go? Where do their souls go? Are they immediately ushered into God’s presence?

When do they stand at the right of God with Christ? Do they sleep until Christ comes back? How will the bodies be resurrected? Will a burned body be resurrected? (we plan on cremation) My Precepts leader made a statement last week that gave me a chill. She told her mom (they were standing at her sons grave, I think) ”this place right here is where the Lord will resurrect him”

I know there is scripture references for all this, does any one wants to lay it down for me in plainspeak?

Questions a 13 year old ask…

Standard

A while back my son asks:

Is it a sin to be rich? And

Can rich people be Christians?

So I embarked on a word study of rich, riches, wealth, money.

We find That Boaz and Abram were wealthy. Also Job. Solomon. Ruth 2:1 and Gen 13:2

We also find that God:

makes the rich and the poor He brings low, He also exalts. (Hannah’s song of thanksgiving in 1 Samuel)

The LORD sends poverty and wealth;
he humbles and he exalts. 1 samuel 2:7

Rich and poor have this in common:
The LORD is the Maker of them all. Proverbs 22:2

Is he not the One who says to kings, ‘You are worthless,’
and to nobles, ‘You are wicked,’

19 who shows no partiality to princes
and does not favor the rich over the poor,
for they are all the work of his hands? Job 34:18-19

19 Moreover, when God gives any man wealth and possessions, and enables him to enjoy them, to accept his lot and be happy in his work—this is a gift of God. Eccl 5:19

the ‘evil or folly’ of money:

Ecclesiastes;  all of chapter 5

The Big One – 1 Timothy 6:10 ”for the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil”

Proverbs 11:28 Whoever trusts in his riches will fall,
but the righteous will thrive like a green leaf.

Psalm 49:16-20 Do not be overawed when a man grows rich,
       when the splendor of his house increases;

17 for he will take nothing with him when he dies,
his splendor will not descend with him.

18 Though while he lived he counted himself blessed—
and men praise you when you prosper-

19 he will join the generation of his fathers,
who will never see the light of life .

20 A man who has riches without understanding
is like the beasts that perish.

Luke 6:24-26    24“But woe to you who are rich,
for you have already received your comfort.
25Woe to you who are well fed now,
      for you will go hungry.
Woe to you who laugh now,
for you will mourn and weep.
26Woe to you when all men speak well of you,
for that is how their fathers treated the false prophets.

*(the woes of vv 24-26 are not pronounced on unbelievers but selfish believers in contrast to sacrificial believers in vv 20-23. bible commentary)

James 5:1-3 1Now listen, you rich people, weep and wail because of the misery that is coming upon you. 2Your wealth has rotted, and moths have eaten your clothes. 3Your gold and silver are corroded. Their corrosion will testify against you and eat your flesh like fire. You have hoarded wealth in the last days.

What God says about us and Him, and what we are to do/think/act out about money/riches/wealth:

The Parable of the Minas Luke 19:11-27 *commentary on Luke 19:11-27 ‘All that we have has been given from God and we are responsible for it.’

Proverbs 3:9-10   9 Honor the LORD with your wealth,
       with the firstfruits of all your crops;

10 then your barns will be filled to overflowing,
and your vats will brim over with new wine.

Isaiah 33:6   6 He will be the sure foundation for your times,
       a rich store of salvation and wisdom and knowledge;
the fear of the LORD is the key to this treasure.

2 Corin 8:2.  in affliction and poverty {the church of Macedonia} they gave to the saints.

1And now, brothers, we want you to know about the grace that God has given the Macedonian churches. 2Out of the most severe trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity. 3For I testify that they gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability.

Phil 4:19. 19And my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus.

Proverb 11:4, 30:8.  4 Wealth is worthless in the day of wrath,
       but righteousness delivers from death.

   7 “Two things I ask of you, O LORD;
do not refuse me before I die:

    8 Keep falsehood and lies far from me;
give me neither poverty nor riches,
but give me only my daily bread.

9 Otherwise, I may have too much and disown you
and say, ‘Who is the LORD ?’
Or I may become poor and steal,
and so dishonor the name of my God.

1Timothy 6:17-19 17Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. 18Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. 19In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life.

[Iknow, there is tons more stuff in the bible about riches and money, but I didn’t have time for all of them]

Ok, that is a lot of info. and it does not really answer the questions, does it?

If one is rich and a christian, does he give all his money away? Does he keep just enough for his family, then give the rest to the poor?

What about just being good stewards of the money and possessions we have?

What about when Jesus sent the disciples out with nothing but the clothes on their back?

I think if we put more time and energy making money, worrying about getting money, hoarding our money, not taking care of our own families with our money and not being good stewards of the money God allows us to make [by giving to the less fortunate], then we are sinning because we are putting money and riches first before our God, who is the owner of all things anyway.

Sometimes I can’t answer my 13 year olds questions about God.

Comments, please, if you can help. There are plenty of wiser folks out there highly capable to answer this seemingly simple question.
